IU graduate students can apply for summer pre-dissertation travel grants that support research-related summer travel abroad prior to conducting dissertation research abroad. Activities supported include exploring potential research sites, archives, or other research resources; establishing institutional affiliations; identifying and meeting local scholars and contacts.
Grants for IU Graduate Students
More about the Grant
The grants support 6-8 week trips for preliminary dissertation fieldwork activities such as exploring potential research sites, archives and other research resources; establishing institutional affiliations; and identifying and meeting with local scholars and contacts as appropriate. Applicants must outline a plan that is designed to secure the feasibility of their eventual dissertation plans.
The grants are awarded to 8-10 students for research-related travel during the summer. Each fellowship consists of a $1,000 stipend plus round-trip economy airfare from Indianapolis to the location where research will be conducted. Travel from other points of origin in the United States is possible if cost of airfare is comparable.
Students who are receiving funds from another source for the same purpose and during the same award period are ineligible to receive funds from this grant.
Applicants may be students from any discipline, department, or campus at Indiana University; must be enrolled in a program leading to the Ph.D. at Indiana University; and have completed at least two years of graduate course work prior to the beginning date of proposed research--at least one year being at IU. This grant is intended for students at the appropriate earlier stage in their program, before beginning work on an approved dissertation topic.
Letters of Reference
One letter of reference from the applicant’s primary Indiana University faculty research advisor is required.
One additional letter/evaluation of foreign language ability from a faculty member or language coordinator, preferably from IU, will also be required in cases where the applicant’s work requires facility in a foreign language and the applicant is not a native speaker of that language.
The next application deadline is March 1, 2019 for Summer 2019 funding.
Application Review Criteria
The faculty review committee will consider:
- scholarly achievement;
- validity and feasibility of proposal;
- requisite language facility;
- faculty support as indicated by letters of reference;
- impact the work will have on the dissertation research plan;
- applicant’s plans to apply for external funding for dissertation research and writing during the following academic year.
